It is nearing the end of the year, and it will soon be time to consider what our 2018 New Year’s resolutions will be! If you are anything like me, it is very exciting to make resolutions. I am an avid planner. I love setting goals and mapping out how I will reach those goals. However, it is frustrating when I make resolutions, only to not keep them. This is a trap that many, if not most people fall into. The new year is a great time to start a new habit or break an old one. What is the difference between people who are able to look back at the end of the year with a sense of pride and accomplishment, and those who look back with a sense of failure and discouragement? It’s not that we’re not setting good goals, or that we are not capable of achieving them. Instead, I think many people who don’t achieve their New Year’s resolutions are simply leaving out a few crucial steps in the process of goal setting. So, how can we approach New Year’s resolutions in a way that will set us up for success in 2018? Let me give you some steps here that will help you.

Step 1: Plan your New Year’s resolutions.

This is the fun part. It’s the part that most people successfully complete. This is actually writing down what goals you want to accomplish in the new year. So, let’s say that your goal is to lose weight. Great! This is a very popular new year’s resolution. But, instead of just writing down “Lose weight,” I am going to challenge you to get much more specific. I want you to write exactly how much weight you want to lose, and by what date you want to lose it. Be realistic! Don’t put a number that is undoable or unhealthy.

Step 2: Position yourself for success.

Do you already have what you need to accomplish this goal? If not, how can you go about getting what you need? Let’s go back to the weight loss example. If your goal is to lose weight, have you chosen a diet plan and a fitness program which will help you achieve your goals? Have you researched both of them sufficiently? Have you cleaned the foods out of your fridge that are off plan, and stocked it with staple foods that are on plan? Have you purchased the appropriate cookbooks, workout videos, gym memberships, etc.?

Step 3: Prepare yourself for daily achievement.

This step might sound similar to Step 2, but they are slightly different. You want to prepare in the sense that when you begin, you will be in autopilot mode. With the weight loss example, this might include scheduling what time of the day and how many days a week you will work out, with what workouts you will begin, and when you plan to intensify your workouts. It would also include making your meal plans for the first few weeks. Remember, you’ve already started stocking your fridge! It is important to remember that you cannot prepare until you have positioned.

Step 4: Produce your results.

After you have planned, positioned, and prepared, now it is time for the action step! You are ready to begin working daily on your new year’s resolutions! This is the part where you start cooking the meals and eating healthy, and doing your workouts every day. Because you have taken the time to be intentional about the first three steps, the production step will fall into place. It will be a lot easier to stay in the habit of producing. Over time, you will notice yourself getting closer and closer to your goal, which you clearly defined from the very beginning. This is so good to keep you out of falling into defeat and failure.

To get you started on accomplishing your 2018 goals, I wanted to include a few of my favorite resources that will greatly help you:

Do you ever feel like your responsibilities to your kids interfere with accomplishing your goals? Then this book is for you! I love any and every book by Laura Vanderkam, but this one is probably my favorite. It is a must-read for all busy, ambitious women! I Know How She Does It: How Successful People Make the Most of Their Time.

I also want to include a link to Laura Vanderkam’s website:

If you sign up for her free e-mail newsletter, you will receive her FREE time makeover guide and time sheet. I have used this, and it was a big eye-opener for how to maximize my time to achieve my goals, even on top of my other responsibilities!

One of the most important ways to set yourself up for having a productive day is to start your day with a solid, unchanging morning routine. If this is something that you aspire to do in 2018, I highly recommend Crystal Paine’s Make Over Your Mornings E-Course. You can buy it for only $17.00. If you buy this course, you are also eligible for a discount on Crystal’s Make Over Your Year E-course. It is regularly $29.00, but if you purchase it with the Make Over Your Mornings e-course, the price goes down to just $10.00! This is HUGE!
